12 Dec Region 9 Championships, 2019 Edition
By Paula Gregory
This year’s USDF Region 9 Great American Insurance Group (GAIG) and Southwest Dressage Championships (SWDC) are held each year in Katy, TX. Riders from around the region (TX, MS, AR, OK, LA) must qualify by achieving the required scores at two recognized shows, riding the highest test at each level (for more information about qualifying go here)
This year’s Championships was a bit smaller than usual but SEDA members were present at a nearly every level. This year’s theme was “Dressage Fiesta”, in addition to the competition there is a silent auction, a barn basket competition and an awards dinner. The Great Southwest Equestrian Center in Katy is a lovely venue for the competition and while the weather in early October is always warm this year it was a little milder than usual. Locals Regina Milliken and Hunter Lewis volunteered at the show.
Janel Martin and Jazzy made their first trip to Championships, competing at both Training and First levels. Katie Tharp-Hebert riding Freya of Riverview won 2nd place at Third level which made her eligible for US Dressage Finals in Kentucky.
In addition to the championship classes, there is a recognized show as well – the Houston Dressage Society Autumn Classic show. Jamie Barowka and Vinnie competed at third level and got their final score toward their USDF Bronze Medal.
